Zainab’s love for crochet began at just nine years old, when a beloved family friend sat down and taught her her very first chain stitch. That simple moment planted a seed that never stopped growing.
By sixteen, she was teaching herself — buying books, studying patterns, and learning through trial and error until the stitches started to make sense. Decades later, she hasn’t put her hook down since.
But as any passionate crafter knows, the right materials make all the difference — and finding high quality yarn at an affordable price in Trinidad was never easy. It wasn’t until she was preparing handmade gifts for her first grandchild that the reality truly hit home. She spent far too much sourcing the quality she knew her work deserved.
That was the moment Island Crafters was born — a store built from love, experience, and the simple belief that every crafter deserves access to beautiful yarn without the hefty price tag.
MEET THE OWNERS
Belkys
Growing up, crochet was simply part of the background of life. Her mum's hands were never still — whether waiting in a queue, sitting at the beach, or passing time anywhere life took them, there was always a hook in hand and yarn in motion. It was just what Mum did.
That all changed when Belkys was fourteen. She wanted a crochet bag — and instead of making it for her, Zainab handed her a hook and said, "I'll teach you." That weekend, nothing else existed. She didn't stop until the bag was finished.
As much as she enjoyed it, the craft never fully took hold — the yarn available locally just didn't inspire her. It felt like something was always missing.
It wasn't until Island Crafters opened its doors that everything clicked. With access to quality materials and a community of fellow makers, the love for the craft finally had room to grow.
Beyond the yarn, Belkys brings a passion for entrepreneurship and a curiosity for all things creative. She's the driving force behind the business — always exploring, always expanding, and always looking for the next craft to fall in love with.
